1918-Age 16

- War Relief matches at Baltusrol, Englewood, Siwanoy and Garden City. Won three singles and two foursomes; lost one foursome with Perry Adair to Emmett French and Jack Dowling.
1919-Age 17
- Lost to Nelson Whitney in semi-finals of Southern amateur at New Orleans.
- Runner-up Canadian open to Douglas Edgar—tied with Jim Barnes and Karl Keifer, 16 strokes behind Edgar.
- Runner-up to Jim Barnes in Southern open. Runner-up to S. Davidson Herron in national amateur.
- Qualified in Western amateur. Lost in first round to Ned Sawyer.
- First entered national open at Inverness, Toledo, finishing with 299, four strokes behind Ted Ray’s 295, which won the tournament.
